Digiware is a campaign that encourages young people to think about how the Internet and smart technology is used in schools. The research project, run by the University of Sheffield, provides schools with resources and information that inspire young people to talk about the digital issues that affect them.

Mojo created the Digiware brand to appeal to a younger audience and devised a series of animated characters to help communicate the message. We worked with a team of researchers from the School of Education to create a series of workshops, using these characters. We delivered the workshops in several schools in Yorkshire to learn how students react to the interventions.

Digiware is an example of a project where Mojo were involved and integral from the start. We developed the concept, the brand, designed the logo and created characters, all of which were used in resources like worksheets, cards and posters. We facilitated workshops alongside researchers. And we created animations to introduce particular sections, for use online and during workshops.

THE
PROCESS

The project began with Mojo getting a commission to make a short, animated film to help explain the concept of “the Internet of Things”. From this, our relationship with the University deepened and we were brought on board as a creative partner on the research project. At initial workshops in schools, we provided live-drawing to help with the visual ideas for the project.

We pitched the idea of creating a unified brand to the researchers and they agreed that it was a good idea to package the interventions with an eye-catching, youth-focused look. We started with characters, developing quick concept sketches done instantly in a meeting into fully realised assets that could be used online and in animations.

The characters, concepts and overall branding we created helped steer the project into a space where young people in schools were more engaged and more able to articulate their own thoughts.
